Investment casting

Term · Additive manufacturing and 3D printing · MLC-T-ADM-000187

A foundry process for creating complex metal objects from a disposable pattern, which is coated in a ceramic slurry to form a shell-like mold. Additive manufacturing technologies, such as stereolithography or material jetting, are frequently used to produce these patterns directly from a digital file, bypassing the need for a traditional wax pattern tool. After the ceramic shell hardens, the 3D printed pattern is melted or burned out, leaving a cavity for the molten metal.
