Anomalous liquid junction potential
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000635
An extra potential, often far larger than an ordinary liquid junction potential, that appears between the reference electrode and the sample in a potentiometric measurement when the salt-bridge filling solution touches the charged particles of a suspension, such as soil or clay. The contact changes the ion arrangement around the particles, for example through exchange of hydrogen or hydroxide ions, and so weakens the suppression of the diffusion potential.
