Cladistics

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002094

A method of biological classification that groups organisms based on shared derived characteristics, or synapomorphies, reflecting their evolutionary relationships. It constructs phylogenetic trees, called cladograms, to illustrate the branching patterns of evolution. This approach emphasizes monophyletic groups, which include a common ancestor and all its descendants.
