Equalization of electronegativity, principle of
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004051
Sanderson's postulate that when atoms combine, their electronegativities become equal in the molecule, with the common value taken as the geometric mean of the atoms' own electronegativities. The shift of each atom toward this mean value gives it a partial charge, which is how the principle is used to estimate charge distribution in a molecule.
