Epstein-Barr virus

A common human herpesvirus (HHV-4) that infects B lymphocytes and epithelial cells, causing infectious mononucleosis and being associated with several cancers, including Burkitt lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. It is transmitted primarily through saliva. The virus establishes a latent infection in B cells, which can persist for life.
