Prophage
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009550
The genetic material of a bacteriophage (a virus that infects bacteria) that has been integrated into the bacterial chromosome. This integrated viral DNA replicates along with the host cell's genome without causing lysis. It can remain dormant for many generations before excising and initiating a lytic cycle.
