Human immunodeficiency virus

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005421

A retrovirus that targets and destroys specific cells of the immune system, primarily CD4+ T cells, leading to a gradual decline in immune function. This viral infection progresses to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) if left untreated, making the body susceptible to opportunistic infections and certain cancers. HIV is transmitted through bodily fluids, such as blood, semen, and breast milk.
