Severe combined immunodeficiency

A group of rare, inherited disorders characterized by a profound defect in both T lymphocyte and B lymphocyte function, leading to a severely compromised immune system. Individuals with SCID are highly susceptible to recurrent, severe infections. Without treatment, such as bone marrow transplantation, it is often fatal in infancy.
