Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

The final and most severe stage of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, characterized by a profound suppression of the immune system. This condition leaves individuals highly susceptible to opportunistic infections and certain cancers. Diagnosis is typically based on a low CD4+ T cell count and the presence of specific opportunistic illnesses.
