Indicator species

A species whose presence, absence, or abundance reflects the health or specific environmental conditions of an ecosystem. These organisms are sensitive to changes in their environment and can provide early warnings of ecological degradation or pollution. For example, the presence of certain lichen species can indicate good air quality.
