Industrial melanism
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005809
The evolutionary phenomenon where dark-colored individuals of a species become more prevalent in industrial areas due to natural selection. This occurs when environmental pollution, such as soot, darkens surfaces, providing camouflage for darker variants against predators. The classic example is the peppered moth, Biston betularia.
