Landolt reaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006435

A chemical reaction whose visible outcome is held back by a reagent added for that purpose, so nothing seems to happen for a while and then the product appears abruptly. The classic example is the iodate and sulfite reaction with starch, in which sulfite reduces the iodine as it forms, and the blue iodine-starch colour appears only once the sulfite is consumed. The length of the delay is set by the amount of sulfite added.
