Hold-back carrier

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013156

A carrier added to a solution so that a chosen species, usually a radionuclide, stays behind instead of being swept along with the other species during an operation such as precipitation or adsorption. It is an inactive amount of the same or a chemically similar element that keeps the radionuclide in the intended solution rather than letting it be carried down with another precipitate. It acts opposite to an ordinary carrier, which is added to bring a radionuclide into a precipitate.
