Locant

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006743

A numeral or letter used in chemical nomenclature to specify the position of a substituent group, functional group, or other structural feature within a molecule or constitutional unit. In polymer nomenclature, locants are used to denote the attachment points of side chains or modifications along the main chain or on a specific monomer unit. For example, in poly(1-chloroethene), the '1' is a locant indicating the position of the chlorine atom.
