Net shaping
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007845
A fabrication process for a ceramic or composite material where the desired final shape is achieved directly during the initial forming stage. This method minimizes or eliminates the need for subsequent material-removal steps, such as machining or grinding, which can introduce surface flaws. Net shaping is applied to powders via techniques like injection molding or to precursors in sol-gel processing, where a gel is cast into a mold before drying and firing.
