Olfaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013361

The sense of smell, which is the physiological function of detecting and perceiving airborne chemical substances as odors. This chemosensory process begins when volatile molecules bind to olfactory receptors located on neurons in the nasal cavity, initiating a signal that is transmitted to the brain. Toxicological assessments can measure deficits in olfaction as an indicator of neurotoxicity, as certain chemicals can damage the olfactory nerves or processing centers.
