Orphan disease

A medical condition affecting a very small proportion of the population. Due to the limited number of patients, pharmaceutical companies often have little financial incentive to develop treatments for these conditions. Governments sometimes offer incentives, such as tax credits or extended market exclusivity, to encourage the development of orphan drugs.
