Orphan drug

A pharmaceutical agent developed to treat a rare disease, also known as an orphan disease. Governments often provide incentives, such as tax credits, extended market exclusivity, and research grants, to encourage pharmaceutical companies to develop these drugs. This support aims to address the unmet medical needs of patients with uncommon conditions.
