Paracrystalline disorder of the second kind
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008437
Structural disorder of a paracrystal in which atoms are permanently displaced from the ideal lattice positions, with the errors accumulating from one lattice cell to the next. Positional correlation therefore decays with distance and true long-range order is lost, so diffraction peaks broaden by an amount that grows with the order of the reflection and weak high-order peaks merge into the background. It contrasts with first-kind disorder, in which uncorrelated displacements leave the peaks sharp.
