Paracrystalline disorder of the first kind

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008436

Structural disorder of a paracrystal in which atoms are displaced from their average lattice positions by uncorrelated fluctuations, mostly thermal, so each displacement is independent of the others and of distance. Long-range order of the average lattice is kept, so Bragg reflections stay sharp but lose intensity at higher scattering angles, as in the Debye-Waller effect. It contrasts with disorder of the second kind, where displacements accumulate and the reflections broaden.
