A primary taxonomic rank in the classification of life, positioned below kingdom and above class. Organisms within a phylum share a distinct body plan, which may be evident in their adult form or during their embryonic development. The animal kingdom, Animalia, is divided into approximately 35 phyla, including Chordata (which includes vertebrates), Arthropoda (insects and crustaceans), and Mollusca (snails and clams).
