Species
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011088
A basic rank of biological classification, a taxonomic subdivision of a genus made up of closely related organisms that are alike in form and physiology. For sexually reproducing organisms members are defined by the ability to interbreed and give fertile offspring, whereas microbial species are delimited mainly by genome similarity and phenotype. Saccharomyces cerevisiae, baker's yeast, is one species, and its individual strains lie below the species level.
