Congenic

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002428

Describing organisms, particularly strains of laboratory animals like mice, that are genetically identical except for a short segment of a single chromosome. These strains are created through a systematic process of repeated backcrossing to an inbred parental strain while selecting for a specific genetic locus from a donor strain. Congenic strains are used to isolate and study the function of a particular gene or genetic region, such as a major histocompatibility complex, in a controlled genetic background.
