Fertile

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004388

A nuclide that is not itself fissile but can be transformed, directly or after radioactive decay, into a fissile nuclide by capturing a neutron. A fertile material is one that contains such nuclides. Uranium-238 is the standard example: it captures a neutron to form uranium-239, which beta decays to neptunium-239 and then to fissile plutonium-239.
