Β-decay
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001156
A type of radioactive decay in which a beta particle (an electron or a positron) is emitted from an atomic nucleus. This process involves the transformation of a neutron into a proton (β⁻ decay) or a proton into a neutron (β⁺ decay), accompanied by the emission of an antineutrino or a neutrino, respectively. Beta decay changes the atomic number of the nucleus while keeping the mass number constant, leading to the formation of a new element.
