Primitive node
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009460
A knot of cells at the front end of the primitive streak in an amniote embryo that serves as the organizer of gastrulation, the movement of cells that sets up the three germ layers, ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm. Cells passing through it form the notochord and signal to the tissue around them to set up the body axis. In birds it is called Hensen's node.
