Primitive pit

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009461

A small depression at the centre of the primitive node, at the cranial end of the primitive streak, in the early embryo. Epiblast cells that move inward at the pit form the notochordal process, which becomes the notochord, whereas the wider stream of cells through the rest of the streak forms mesoderm and definitive endoderm. The pit is continuous with the primitive groove that runs along the streak behind the node.
