Proctodeum
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009498
An external invagination of the ectoderm at the caudal end of a developing embryo that contributes to the formation of the anus and anal canal. This depression deepens toward the hindgut, from which it is initially separated by the cloacal membrane. The eventual rupture of this membrane establishes the external opening of the gastrointestinal tract.
