Anus
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000719
The external opening at the terminal end of the gastrointestinal tract, through which feces are expelled from the body. It is controlled by two sphincter muscles: the internal anal sphincter (involuntary smooth muscle) and the external anal sphincter (voluntary skeletal muscle). Developmental defects can result in conditions such as an imperforate anus, where the opening is absent or blocked.
