Protective immunity

The state of resistance to infection or disease conferred by the immune system, preventing or reducing the severity of subsequent encounters with a specific pathogen. This immunity can be acquired naturally after exposure to an infectious agent or artificially through vaccination. It involves the coordinated action of humoral and cellular immune responses.
