The ability of the immune system to recognize and respond more rapidly and effectively to a pathogen or antigen upon subsequent encounters. This acquired immunity is mediated by specialized memory cells that persist after the initial exposure. It forms the basis of vaccination, providing long-lasting protection against specific diseases.
