Radical exit

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009851

The escape of a radical from a polymer particle into the surrounding continuous phase during emulsion polymerization. The escaping species is a small radical, typically a monomeric radical formed when the growing chain transfers its activity to a monomer molecule or other small molecule, which then diffuses out of the particle. Exit lowers the average number of radicals per particle and with it the polymerization rate, and it is quantified by an exit frequency per radical in units of s-1.
