Saturnism
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010534
A condition caused by lead poisoning, classically the chronic form from repeated exposure, with neurological, gastrointestinal and hematological features such as abdominal colic, anemia and peripheral neuropathy. Lead accumulates mainly in bone and disrupts enzymes of heme synthesis. Diagnosis rests on blood lead measurement, and overt symptoms in adults usually appear only at levels of roughly 40 micrograms per deciliter or more, although subtler effects are reported below that.
