Somatic hypermutation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013570
A cellular process that introduces point mutations into the variable regions of immunoglobulin genes in B lymphocytes, primarily within germinal centers. This process increases the diversity of antibody specificities, allowing for the production of antibodies with higher affinity for antigens. It is a key mechanism in the adaptive immune response.
