Spectator-stripping reaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011120

An extreme form of stripping reaction in a molecular collision, in which one product leaves with nearly the direction and momentum that one reactant carried before the collision. The projectile strips an atom from the target molecule, and the rest of the target acts as a spectator that moves on almost undisturbed. It is a direct, fast mechanism, as in the reaction of Ar+ with D2 to give ArD+.
