Stripping reaction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011483
A reaction in which a projectile pulls an atom or group off a target in a distant, glancing collision, so the products are scattered forward relative to the centre of mass of the colliding pair. It is studied in molecular beam experiments, for example with alkali metal atoms and halogen molecules. In nuclear physics the same word describes transfer of nucleons from projectile to target, as in the deuteron-proton (d,p) reaction.
