Symmetry coordinate
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011728
A linear combination of internal coordinates (bond stretches, angle bends) that transforms according to an irreducible representation of the molecular point group. These coordinates simplify the analysis of molecular vibrations by factoring the secular equation into smaller blocks. They are used in vibrational spectroscopy to predict the number and symmetry of normal modes.
