Ultimate biodegradation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012391
The complete breakdown of an organic compound by microorganisms in the presence of oxygen, resulting in its conversion into carbon dioxide, water, mineral salts, and new biomass. This process represents the highest level of biodegradation, where no persistent organic residues remain. It is assessed by measuring the consumption of oxygen or the production of carbon dioxide over time.
