Unbiased stereology

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012415

A set of quantitative morphological methods for estimating three-dimensional structural parameters, such as number, length, surface area, or volume, from two-dimensional sections of a specimen. The techniques employ systematic random sampling and specific geometric probes (points, lines, planes) to provide estimates that are not biased by the size, shape, or orientation of the structures. The optical fractionator and the Cavalieri principle are examples of unbiased stereological estimators.
