The magnitude of a quantity as it is normally written, a number multiplied by a unit. The number is called the numerical value, and the unit is the reference quantity against which the magnitude is counted. A blood glucose reading of 5.5 mmol/L, for example, has the numerical value 5.5 and the unit millimole per litre.
