Vigilance
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012574
A state of sustained attention and readiness to detect and respond to specific, infrequent, and unpredictable environmental stimuli or changes over a prolonged period. This cognitive function is necessary for tasks requiring constant monitoring, such as air traffic control or watching for safety signals. The ability to maintain vigilance can be impaired by fatigue, monotony, and exposure to certain neurotoxic substances, leading to a decline in performance.
