Vidicon
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012573
A type of television camera tube used as a multichannel detector in spectroscopy, consisting of an electron gun and a photoconductive target within an evacuated glass envelope. An optical image focused on the target creates a pattern of varying electrical resistance, which is read by a scanning electron beam to generate a video signal. Vidicons were used in early diode-array spectrometers but have been largely replaced by charge-coupled devices.
