A telecommunications standard, Asynchronous Transfer Mode, for digital transmission of multiple types of traffic using small, fixed-size cells. It was designed to unify circuit-switched and packet-switched networks to handle voice, video, and data simultaneously. Each ATM cell consists of a 53-byte structure, containing a 5-byte header and a 48-byte payload, which contrasts with the variable-length packets of Ethernet and Internet Protocol.
