A 16-bit numerical identifier in an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) cell header that specifies a particular virtual circuit on a physical connection. The Virtual Channel Identifier works in conjunction with the Virtual Path Identifier (VPI) to route cells through the ATM network. A single physical link can support thousands of virtual channels, each identified by a unique VPI/VCI pair.
