A Virtual Path Identifier is a field in the header of an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) cell that identifies a virtual path. A virtual path is a bundle of virtual channels that all share the same path between two ATM switches. The VPI, along with the Virtual Channel Identifier (VCI), forms a complete routing address for an ATM cell.
