Fragmentation

A phenomenon where the storage space on a disk or in memory becomes divided into many small, non-contiguous blocks, making it harder to allocate large contiguous blocks. This can occur as files are created, deleted, and modified over time. Disk defragmentation tools are used to consolidate these scattered pieces.
