An extension to a file system that allows filenames to exceed the traditional 8.3 character limit of early systems like MS-DOS. Long Filename support, introduced with Windows 95, allows for more descriptive names containing up to 255 characters. To maintain backward compatibility, the system automatically generates a corresponding 8.3 alias for each long filename.
