Phreaking

The act of exploring, experimenting with, or exploiting telecommunication systems, particularly telephone networks, often to make free calls or gain unauthorized access. Early phreakers used devices like 'blue boxes' to generate tones that mimicked the internal signals of the phone system. This activity emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, preceding the rise of computer hacking.
