x64
Term · Computing and IT · MLC-T-CMP-001402
The 64-bit version of the x86 instruction set architecture, supporting a much larger address space than its 32-bit predecessor. It allows a computer's processor to access system memory beyond the 4-gigabyte limit of 32-bit systems, which benefits memory-intensive applications. Processors implementing this architecture, such as AMD64 or Intel 64, can execute both 32-bit and 64-bit software, though a 64-bit operating system is required to run 64-bit applications.
