Acoustic coupler

A device that converts electrical signals from a modem into sound waves and vice versa, allowing data transmission over standard telephone lines using a conventional handset. It typically consists of rubber cups that fit over the telephone receiver and mouthpiece, isolating the audio signals. This technology was prevalent before direct-connect modems became widespread.
